What Photographers should know before you start?

Updated: Feb 14, 2021

Some people ask me, why do photographers charge so much to only shoot a wedding or a portfolio? The answer is very simple, photography is not just clicking the button and the camera taking a picture. It is creating memories so that, when years later you watch those pictures, you re-live that moment.

Now creating those memories do not come cheap, as a photographer you need to understand just having a camera does not make you a good photographer. A good photograph consist of many elements, such as lights, diffusers, reflectors, lens, camera and a lot of creativity to understand your image. This is not to make you scared or discourage you from entering into this field, rather preparing you of what lies ahead, if you are thinking of pursuing this as a profession. You also need to invest a lot of time practicing, understanding lights and its effect on your image.

As the world is constantly changing in terms of technology, you also need to keep yourself updated with the latest techniques and equipment. You as a photographer need to understand, what type of photography(Wildlife photographer, Photojournalism, Wedding photography, Fashion photography) will you be taking up? This is mainly to help invest in the right equipment rather than investing in something you may never use. This is the primary reason why many photographers grow disappointed or quit altogether, as they do not get the desired results with the equipment they already own, and cameras and lens do not come cheap, and replacing them would burn a hole in your pocket.

Please do not be discouraged or disappointed after reading the above, the bottom line would be - not even the best camera or equipment can give you results, unless the person behind the camera understands, and uses his/her creativity to capture the viewers attention through their image. Whatever you do, understand that you need to have fun, which in return will reflect in your image.

Keeping practicing because no image is bad, it is just your perspective of the entire frame and how you want to present it to the viewer.
